Overview
Based in New Covent Garden Market in London, Le Marché is a premium greengrocer and catering supply company with roots stretching back to 1770. Marcus Rowlerson, Managing Director of Le Marché, was described by The Observer newspaper as the ‘Internet’s favourite greengrocer’ on account of the phenomenal following of his daily seasonal updates on Instagram. Le Marché supplies an exclusive group of restaurants and hotels that it describes as ‘The 100 Club’, the FTSE 100 of the catering world, which includes six restaurants that hold three Michelin Stars. The company is also an Associate Member of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and a supporter of The Gold Service Scholarship and League of Club Chefs.
Challenge
Le Marché makes several hundred deliveries a day to fine dining establishments in and around London. Most of Le Marché’s fleet of vans cover less than 25 miles a day, with the majority travelling between 18 and 25 miles, while a small number cover between 100 and 125 miles. Efficiency for the business centres on organising a large number of individual drops across a small geographic area, making optimal use of drivers and vehicles while maintaining visibility of every delivery throughout the day.
Before implementing Podfather, Le Marché relied on manual processes and paper-based workflows to manage its transport operations. Producing delivery schedules and manifests, allocating work to drivers, and processing return paperwork created a significant administrative burden for office staff.
- Manual generation and processing of delivery schedules, manifests, and driver work allocations.
- Heavy reliance on physical paper proof of deliveries, meaning information was not immediately available to office staff.
- Potential delays in dealing with customer queries due to a lack of real-time operational visibility.
Solution
Faced with operational challenges, Le Marché identified Podfather as a complete solution to handle high-volume deliveries, route and allocate work effectively, provide operational visibility, and capture electronic proof of delivery. Ease of use and reliable support were essential requirements, as Ben Cartwright, Business Development Manager at Le Marché, noted: “Podfather offered all the functionality we needed within a single system. It is also well supported. This isn’t something we use occasionally - it is an integral part of our daily delivery operation so reliable support is essential.”
Le Marché deployed Podfather across its day-to-day transport operation to plan and optimise routes, taking into account the varying distances covered by its vehicles and placing additional importance on delivery sequencing. The software guides automated vehicle safety checks across the fleet, making it easier for managers to identify and resolve reported issues. Additionally, real-time tracking via the Podfather app gives complete visibility of each day's schedule as it progresses, while electronic proof of delivery captures time, date, and location stamped photographs and signatures.
Results
By replacing paper systems with Podfather, Le Marché achieved total visibility and control over its complex delivery routes without creating a corresponding increase in paperwork and administration. Electronic proof of delivery evidence provides clearer records for customer or billing enquiries, allowing office teams to handle customer queries quickly without paper-related delays.
Furthermore, performance dashboards and reporting tools allow Le Marché to extract operational intelligence that supports business growth and continuous improvements in customer service. Guided vehicle checks simplify fleet maintenance management, while optimised route sequencing ensures the business makes the best use of drivers and vehicles across its high-volume delivery operations.
Podfather helps us to maintain visibility and control over our complex delivery routes without creating a corresponding increase in paperwork and administration.
