So, What’s the "Podduck" All About?

Our company mascot, the humble rubber duck, gets a lot of attention, so we wanted to share the real story behind it (and prove we aren't just crazy duck lovers here at Podfather).

As a Podfather employee, one of my most prized possessions is my Podduck, which was given to me on my very first day in the business. I was a little bewildered at first, to say the least. But when you visit the Podfather HQ in Edinburgh, you quickly start to notice that these little ducks are absolutely everywhere. So, why is that?

Here at Podfather, we develop software solutions that help fleet operators simplify the highly complex problem of planning and managing a vehicle fleet. Because we are a software company, we have a large team of incredibly clever individuals responsible for building the paper-free solutions that help companies run more efficiently every single day.

If you are a software engineer reading this, you might already know where I'm going. But if you aren't, I'd like to point you in the direction of The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master. Written by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas and published in 1999, it is a renowned book about computer programming. While you might not want to read it unless you have an active interest in coding, it features an ingenious concept that we at Podfather have fully embraced.

When it comes to debugging code, many programmers turn to the tried-and-true method of "rubber duck debugging," a concept outlined in the aforementioned book.

The premise is simple: if you can explain your code out loud to a rubber duck (or any other inanimate object), it forces you to think through each step in a highly logical way. Voila! This simple shift in perspective often helps you identify problems with your code that would otherwise be incredibly hard to detect.

In short, what started as a helpful trick for our developers has blossomed into a concept utilised across every department in our business. The notion of taking a complicated problem and explaining it in a simple, effective way to an inanimate object genuinely helps you think more clearly. Whether you are trying to pull together a tricky email or write a complex presentation, it is always worth giving it a go.

The exact same concept applies when we are dealing with our customers and contacts. Ultimately, anyone talking to us here at Podfather is trying to simplify an inherently complicated process, so the duck concept applies perfectly to logistics, too.

About 3 years ago, we took a flock of Podducks to a tradeshow, and they absolutely flew off the stand (if you'll pardon the pun). With their bright colours and squishy texture, acting as stress-busting ducks for those moments when you really can't find the right word or code, they are a massive hit wherever we go.

Customers keep them on their desks, employees take them on holiday for social media photo opportunities, and wherever the Podduck goes, we take the story of how it came to be along with it.

You could be forgiven for thinking that we are just a group of technically minded folk who spend our time talking to ducks, but I can assure you that is not the case.
