Challenge

As the business evolved, Thomas Ridley had to continually respond to changing market pressures and customer demands. The legacy, paper-reliant processes across their delivery operations required substantial administration and restricted real-time transparency for customers expecting time-critical food drops.

  • The delivery framework generated high levels of paper consumption, clashing with the company's eco-conscious goals.
  • Customers frequently had to contact the company directly for status updates, causing a high volume of inbound calls for the Customer Service team.
  • Transport teams needed a more agile way to manage vehicle compliance and monitor fleet performance dashboards effectively.

Solution

Thomas Ridley implemented the Podfather logistics platform across its delivery network, introducing automated routing processes, digital manifests, and electronic proof of delivery workflows. The software sits alongside their distribution operations to intelligently manage schedules once goods are picked from the warehouse and loaded onto the trucks.

Drivers utilize the Podfather mobile app to access their active schedules and receive live updates as the day unfolds. Thomas Ridley has also leveraged Podfather's configurable Vehicle Check functionality, developing a specific suite of checks for its fleet of mixed temperature trucks to record daily vehicle walkaround data and ensure strict compliance with legal requirements and industry standards.

Results

The rollout of Podfather has successfully transformed operations for Thomas Ridley, delivering an immediate reduction in paper consumption of more than 50 percent, saving the equivalent of nearly 40 trees a year. The deployment has significantly elevated the customer experience, evidenced by a dramatic drop in delivery status queries and incoming calls received by the Customer Service team.

Once routes are sorted, ETAs are automatically issued to customers via email or text, allowing clients to self-serve revised delivery times using real-time tracking information pulled directly from the driver's app. Furthermore, detailed reporting has yielded widespread efficiency gains, supporting Thomas Ridley in configuring customized outputs from real-life data—ranging from vehicle wash records for the Food Standards Agency to individual customer SLA metrics.

Podfather has supported us at every step of the journey to ensure the solution we needed was the solution they provided. As we have evolved and had to respond to changing market pressures, so have they, and I can confidently say that Podfather is here to stay helping us to live up to our pledge to ‘deliver food for life’.
