Overview
S&W Wholesale is one of the largest independent wholesalers of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) in Ireland and ranks as a top 100 Northern Ireland Business. The company serves over 2,500 customers from its location in Newry, which is conveniently positioned close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. In January 2023, S&W transitioned to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) model of ownership, making it one of the largest known businesses in Northern Ireland to adopt this structure.
The business offers next day delivery of chilled, frozen and ambient temperature goods to both independent and symbol retailers. S&W manages an impressive wholesale portfolio that holds an offering of more than 4,000 products alongside an additional 4,000 lines of full central billing. To sustain its forward-thinking ethos and prepare for a newly approved £15 million, 17,000 sqm storage and distribution centre, the company is doubling its current delivery fleet.

Challenge
Prior to integrating the platform, S&W Wholesale required a more scalable transport setup to support its immense infrastructural expansion without losing control of operational quality. The company needed to modernise its legacy fulfillment processes to align with its ongoing commercial growth.
- The existing transport framework needed a comprehensive review of order management and delivery routing processes to discover driving efficiencies.
- Traditional tracking methods lacked real-time visibility, preventing customers, management and support staff from actively monitoring delivery progress.
- The administrative team lacked a modern electronic process to track trailer metrics, log incident reports and dynamically rectify reported fleet defects.
Solution
S&W Wholesale rolled out Podfather's fleet logistics system to restructure its daily planning, transport workflows and execution tracking. The platform works closely alongside the wholesaler's existing infrastructure, complementing its stock management system, voice picking technology, retailer EPOS and Rescan Till Systems.
The implementation introduces route optimisation algorithms that calculate delivery sequences while automatically taking vehicle weight and capacity, driver shift length and customer delivery windows into consideration. S&W is deploying digital tracking components, email and SMS ETA notifications, and advanced electronic Proof of Delivery (ePOD) features across its transport network.
Results
The deployment of Podfather is successfully establishing early foundations for increased efficiency, supporting S&W Wholesale as it scales into its new five-fold larger warehouse facility. The inclusion of automated ETA notifications and an upcoming live tracking portal will grant customers, support staff and management real-time visibility over deliveries to allow for quick interventions.
On-site, drivers use advanced ePOD features to capture real-time, digital data including date, time and location-stamped photographs and signatures. This immediate documentation can be shared instantly to answer customer queries, while the precise details—including specific item codes—can be logged against communications to automatically generate credit notes and improve back-office transport administration.
Podfather will play an integral part in supporting our expansion helping to build early foundations for increased efficiency throughout the business. We are working closely with Podfather to ensure the system meets our current and future requirements. This expanded use of the Podfather fleet management solution will complement our existing stock management system, voice picking technology, and retailer EPOS and Rescan Till Systems, to realise benefits across the transport and delivery operation.
